Lead Louisiana (for Teens) to Launch October 18 in Oak Grove

The Lead Louisiana for Teens is being piloted in partnership with West Carroll Partners in Prevention in Oak Grove, LA. Classes will begin on October 18 in Oak Grove.

This leadership course provides 6 hours of training including some new features just for teens in the 9th-12th grades. "We will be using a leadership simulator from the Harvard University Business School during the training. The simulator gives students active participation in making decisions as leaders and followers during a dangerous mission: Each team must climb Mt. Everest. Each team will have 6 days to make the climb and along the way they will make decisions about how to climb safely and successfully to the top", Barnes said.

"This will mark the first time we've trained youth with the Lead Louisiana program. We're looking forward to this and appreciate the West Carroll Partners in Prevention in Oak Grove working with us on this project", Barnes said.

The Lead Louisiana Institute - Faculty Prepare Launch for Fall 2009

Faculty at the LSU Agricultural Center's Delta Rural Development Center have created the Lead Louisiana Institute. LLI will focus on delivering multiple courses in leadership training to rural community leaders.

The first course, Lead Louisiana, has already been piloted tested in Tensas, Richland and Concordia Parishes in the spring of 2009. Faculty are preparing to offer Lead Louisiana 2, a regional leadership program building on principles of leadership learned in Lead Louisiana. Also, faculty are developing a special program dedicated to supporting the development of non-profit organizations by delivering leadership training to board directors and members throughout the 12 parish Louisiana Delta Initiative region starting in 2010.

Lead Louisiana - Concordia Parish, Begins April 28

Tonight, participants from Concordia Parish met at the Arcade in Ferriday, Louisana to participate in the Louisiana Delta Initiative educational course Lead Louisiana. This course was developed by faculty at the LSU Agricultural Center's Delta Rural Development Center and Southern University's Agricultural Center.

Participants studied Foundations of Community Development and Leadership whereby they learned the basics of how leadership affects community development. Participants identified personality styles and learned how to work as a team during the egg drop activity.

Lead Louisiana Begins in Richland Parish, March 3

Tonight, community leaders from Richland Parish began Lead Louisiana, a 12 hour leadership training program for local parish leaders. Lead Louisiana is an educational program developed as part of the Louisiana Delta Initiative. Faculty from the LSU and Southern Agricultural Centers developed the program.

Mission Statement

The mission of Lead Louisiana is to provide educational experiences relative to leadership that result in participants becoming eligible for certification as Louisiana Lead graduates. The curriculum is designed to increase the leadership knowledge and skills of elected officials, existing and emerging community leaders and volunteers. Graduates will become more engaged in community decision making at the local, parish and regional level to enhance community rural development.

James Evans:
CL1: The egg drop activity was a masterpiece. This activity demonstrated many aspects of management that leaders have to deal with everyday. The participants had to work together in problems with lack of time, unexpected events, limited resources, and teamwork.

Larry Perkins:
CL1: One of the lessons I learned from the egg drop activity that I will be able to utilize to solve any Community related problem is that if we work together as a group, we can solve any problem, budget, communication, failure, or hard decision issue that may require teamwork to resolve along with good planning, effective delegating of authority to the correct personalities involved in the process, great communication, and faith in the Teams efforts.
Secondly, the egg drop activity also proved that if there are enough people working together with a common goal to achieve, the group can achieve their desired results in what they working to accomplish for our Tensas Parish Community.
Thirdly, the lessons learned from the egg drop activity also proved that even if we have limited resources in the beginning to attempt to accomplish a Project, we can still accomplish our objectives if we brainstorm, come up with the best ideas from the group, voted on the final decisions, and then worked together to achieved the desired results. Annie Carroll: CL1: I can take the lesson from the egg drop activity and apply it to community problem solving because this activity taught us to work together as a group, problem solving, budget, communication, failure or success on plans, good or bad for the community and it takes people for success.

Carolyn Reed:
CL1: The egg drop activity showed me if there are enough people working together with a common goal, the possibilities are endless in what they can attain for their community.

Catherine Gray:
CL1: When you work as part of a team you can accomplish your goal.

CL2: Each personality type brings something to the table. All types working together can accomplish any problem

CL3: It's amazing the things you think you know that you really do not know. Since mostly everything I learned were new skills, I would have to go over everything again in order to improve any meetings.

Jane Netterville:
CL1: Lessons learned from the egg drop activity, for me, was that with limited resources you could still accomplish your objective if you worked together. I also learned that failure is just one of the steps to success.

LSU and SU Agricultural Centers launch blog for Lead Louisiana leadership program

Community rural development faculty at Louisiana State University Agricultural Center and Southern University Agricultural Center have established a new parish leadership program in northeast Louisiana, Lead Louisiana.

The mission of Lead Louisiana is to provide educational experiences relative to leadership that result in participants becoming eligible for certification as Lead Louisiana graduates. The curriculum has been designed to increase the leadership knowledge and skills of elected officials, existing and emerging community leaders and volunteers. Graduates will become more engaged in community decision making at the local, parish and regional level to enhance community rural development.

Lead Louisiana is one of several educational programs offered as part of the Louisiana Delta Initiative, a new regional community and economic development effort to bring leadership and entrepreneurship education to the Louisiana Delta parishes in northeast Louisiana.

The Louisiana Delta Initiative is a newly formed regional network of community and economic development organizations working in collaboration to improve the economic conditions in a 12 parish, Louisiana delta region including the parishes of Caldwell, Catahoula, Concordia, East Carroll, Franklin, Madison, Morehouse, Quachita, Pointe Coupee, Richland, Tensas and West Carroll.
